What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy is easier when you know what the first steps look like. Here is how it works, from the first call to the first session and beyond.

Before You Book: The Free 15-Minute Consultation

The first step is a free 15-minute consultation. It is a short, private conversation about what is bringing you here and whether we may work well together. You do not need to prepare anything. You can describe what has been difficult in a sentence or two, ask about my approach, and get a sense of what it feels like to talk with me.

There is no obligation to continue afterward. If it seems like a good fit, we can schedule a first session. If it does not, that is useful to know too. You can book the consultation directly or send a message first through Work With Me.

The Paperwork, Kept Simple

Once you schedule, you receive two short documents: a one-page Informed Consent and a two-page Intake Form. The Informed Consent explains how the practice works. The Intake Form asks for basic background so our first hour can focus on you rather than on forms.

You sign and send back both forms before we meet, and you also have access to a digital portal on a HIPAA-compliant platform, as described on the FAQ page. You can complete the forms at your own pace. If a question feels unclear or too personal to answer in writing, you can leave it and we can talk about it in session.

In Person or Telehealth

You can meet in person at FUSE WorkSpace, 13341 W Hwy 290, Austin, TX 78737, a private, quiet room in Southwest Austin with easy parking. Or you can meet by secure video from anywhere in Texas. You must be located in Texas during each telehealth session, since my license covers Texas only.

Both formats offer the same session length, the same fee, and the same attentive approach. You can choose one format and stay with it, or mix the two depending on the week. You can see which communities are close to the office on Areas Served, and learn how video sessions work on Online Therapy Across Texas.

What Happens in the First Session

The first session is a bit like a focused, high-level consultation. We start with what is standing in your way right now: the stress, the pattern, the loss, or the question that brought you here. I will ask about what you are noticing, how it affects your days, and what you hope might change.

Your history comes into the conversation where it helps, but the focus stays on your present pain points. You do not have to tell your whole life story in one hour. By the end of the session, we will have a preliminary roadmap: a shared sense of what we will work on first and how we might approach it. That roadmap can change as we learn more.

What You Might Bring

You do not need a polished story. A few notes on your phone are more than enough, and so is simply showing up. If it helps to think ahead, you might consider:

  • What prompted you to reach out now, rather than six months ago.
  • What you hope will feel different, even if it is hard to put into words.
  • Any questions about my approach, privacy, or scheduling.
  • Anything about language or culture that matters to how you want to do this work.

How It May Feel Afterward

There is no right way to feel after a first session. You may feel lighter, as if something you have carried alone has finally been said aloud. You may feel tired, or unexpectedly emotional, especially if you touched on something you usually keep at a distance. You may also feel uncertain, still deciding whether therapy is for you.

All of these are normal responses. It can help to leave a little space after the session, rather than rushing straight into a meeting or errand. If something from the session stays with you, you are welcome to bring it up next time. How you felt afterward is useful information for our work together.

Fees, Scheduling and Cancellation

Individual sessions are 50 to 60 minutes and $210, in person or online. The practice is private pay. Monthly superbills are available on request if you would like to seek out-of-network reimbursement from your plan, although reimbursement is not guaranteed.

Hours are Monday to Friday, 11:00am to 8:00pm, with evening appointments Monday to Thursday. If you need to cancel, please give 24 hours' notice to avoid the $90 late fee. You can find the full details on Rates.

How Long Therapy Lasts

The length of therapy is individualized. My approach is designed to be efficient. Short-term work of approximately 8 to 12 sessions can suit a specific, immediate goal, such as navigating a stressful transition or building skills for a particular challenge. Long-standing patterns may call for longer work.

I cannot predict the exact length of therapy for you, and I cannot promise a particular outcome. What I can offer is regular attention to how the work is going, so that together we can decide whether to continue, adjust our focus, or bring it to a close.

If You Are in Crisis

This practice is not a crisis service, and messages may not be seen right away. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, call 911. You can also call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at any hour. Once you are safe, therapy can be a place for longer-term support.
