Relocating, whether across the state or across the world, rearranges almost everything at once: your routines, your support network, the language of your daily life, and sometimes your sense of who you are. Even a move you wanted can bring loss. The excitement of a new role or a new city may sit alongside loneliness, fatigue, and the strange feeling of being a beginner again at things that used to be automatic. Therapy offers a steady place while the rest of life is still being unpacked.
Relocation and Expat Life
Therapy for Relocation and Expat Life
A move can be exciting and still leave you feeling unmoored. Both can be true at once.
The Quiet Loneliness After the Move
The first weeks may be busy with logistics. The harder part can come later, once the boxes are gone and the calendar is empty of familiar faces. Friendships take time to build, and the people who know you best may be in another time zone. You may find yourself explaining your background over and over, or holding back parts of yourself that do not translate easily. Loneliness in a new place is not a personal failure. It is an understandable response to losing a web of connection, and it deserves care rather than judgment.
Identity Between Places
Living in a new culture can raise questions you never had to ask before. You may feel more like yourself in one language than another, or notice that your humor, confidence, or directness changes depending on where you are. You may feel that you belong fully neither here nor there. These experiences are meaningful, not inconsistent. Therapy can help you integrate the different parts of your story rather than choosing one over another. Sessions are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese; see Therapy in Spanish and Portuguese.
Moves Made for Work
You may have moved for a promotion, a new company, or an assignment with a clear end date. A professional relocation can come with high expectations and little time to adjust. You may be expected to perform at full speed while your personal life is still in pieces. If you moved with a partner, you may also be navigating their adjustment alongside your own. Our work is individual and focuses on your experience of the change and what you need to settle. Career and life transitions describes related work.
A Therapist Who Has Moved Five Times
I am originally from Venezuela, and I have relocated internationally five times. I have lived in Caracas, Panama City, Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, Miami, and Austin. I know from experience what it means to start over, to miss home, and to build a life in a place that does not yet feel like yours. That history shapes how I listen, but I do not assume your experience matches mine. I bring curiosity to your particular story, culture, and circumstances. You can read more on my About page.
Returning Home Can Be a Move Too
Coming back after years abroad can be surprisingly difficult. Home may have changed, and so have you. The people who knew you before may expect the person who left, while you are still integrating everything you lived elsewhere. That reverse adjustment is easy to overlook, which can make it feel isolating. Therapy can help you make sense of what you gained, what you lost, and how to carry both into the life you are building now.
Therapy While You Settle in Texas
Because my license covers Texas only, sessions can begin once you are located in Texas, and you must be in Texas during each session. Telehealth is available anywhere in the state by secure video, and in-person sessions take place at FUSE WorkSpace on West Highway 290 in Southwest Austin. If you are still getting to know your new home, Areas Served and Online Therapy Across Texas describe where and how we can meet.
