Anxiety That Looks Like Productivity

Early morning light falling across a quiet bedroom in pale mint and cream tones

A question I get frequently from people exploring anxiety therapy in Austin (Texas): how can I be anxious if I am getting so much done? Anxiety does not always look like panic. For many accomplished adults it looks like over-preparing, rereading emails before sending them, lying awake rehearsing tomorrow, or feeling unable to rest until every task is closed. It can pass for diligence for years.

One small practice to try this week: when you notice the urge to check something again, pause for three slow breaths and ask, "What am I afraid will happen if I don't?" You do not need a polished answer. Simply naming the fear can create a little space, and it tells you something about what the anxiety is guarding.

If the pattern feels bigger than a breathing pause, that is not a failure. It may be a sign that the worry has deeper roots worth understanding. In therapy we can look at those roots with care and build practical skills from CBT and DBT alongside.

This is general information, not a substitute for individual care. I see adults across Texas by secure video, and there is more about anxiety and mood on my website.
